The Governing and Engineering Autonomous Reliable Systems (GEARS) Special Interest Group is based in the School of Computer Science at the University of Nottingham, UK.

Our aim is to reduce or remove safety, security, or societal harms. We are interested in a broad range of Software Engineering techniques that can acheive this aim.

We focus on the

• Requirements that a system should obey;
• Implementation of the system, which should obey its requirements;
• Verification of the system’s implementation against its requirements;
• Engineering of the pysical aspects of the system in a way that supports its requirements; and,
• Reality in the system will be used.

We refer to this as the RIVER framework.
